What Is So Good About Good Friday?

“For if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.” [Galatians 2:21]

INTRODUCTION: Through the words of our text, St. Paul argues that being right with God can not come through what we think, say, and do at all, but instead, this status can only come through Christ’s passion.  For you see, if we ourselves could have atoned for our own sins or if we could have repented by ourselves so that we might somehow become worthy to enter the kingdom of God, then God could have spared His own Son and spared Him from having to drink the bitter cup of our salvation.

I. But since God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, we can, each of us, be assured that there was no other way for Him to win us for Himself.

A. Holy Scripture testifies over and over again that Christ suffered and died that horrible death for us ungodly, sinful, and filthy creatures.  Why?  So that God could make us godly, righteous, and cleansed creatures through Jesus!  And so, we have been redeemed, brought back to God and made right with Him by the suffering, passion, and death of His Son.

B. Through His death on the cross, Jesus made a way out of no way for us, back to His Father.  By His death upon the cross, Christ disarmed the powers and principalities that once held us in the bondage of sin, death, and the devil, which without Christ’s death would hold us helpless and hopeless for eternity.

II. The atonement and passion of Christ as we stated two weeks ago in our Sunday message, is the most important teaching of the Gospel. And because of its importance we must repeat it often, even tonight: Christ died for our sins!

A. Holy Scripture also adds a very important addendum to this declaration: “We are convinced (that is we have been convinced and are still being convinced by the Word of God) that One has died for all; therefore all have died (in Christ).” [2 Corinthians 5:14]

B. Christ has died as our substitute; He died as your substitute.  It was your sins that He bore upon the cross.  That’s why His death is of vital concern to you.  He was wounded for your transgressions.  And by His stripes you are healed.  On the cross He tasted death, eternal death, and upon that tree of woe He had to experience for the first time what it means to be forsaken by God; what it feels like to be cast away from His presence and have both the Father and the Spirit ripped away from Him.

C. As St. Paul says in Romans 8, “Christ became a curse for us.”  And by this, He redeemed us from the curse of the law.  So in Christ’s Kingdom there is no more condemnation, because Christ took that also upon Himself for you.

III. The assurance that this passion of Christ really is for your salvation is given to you in the waters of your own baptism.

A. There you were baptized into the death of Christ and there you became a partaker of all that He has won for you through His suffering, death, and resurrection.  So, for this reason you must remember that your baptism isn’t just something nice that was done for you long ago, but rather it was the beginning of a life that is still being lived today, and it’s being lived out in fellowship with the crucified Christ.

B. To live as a baptized Christian then is to live by faith as one who has died with Christ; that is, your sinful nature has been destroyed, but then as we will celebrate in two more days on Easter Sunday, you have also been raised with Christ, that is your redeemed nature is now your eternal nature if you will but continue to receive this truth, this work of Christ by faith.

So, to live as a baptized Christian is to live “by faith in the Son of God, who loved you and gave Himself for you!”

CONCLUSION: Even though the death of Christ is the most earthshaking event in history, it is also a constant source of assurance, joy, and thanksgiving.  Why?  Because Christ died forsaken on the cross.  And because of His death, no one who trusts in Him and His cross need ever fear that He will die forsaken by God.

Because on Good Friday Christ bore the sins of the world, He bore your sins so that you can live however many days God has granted to you as His child of faith, by faith in Him who died for you!

“For if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.” so goes the argument of St. Paul in his letter to the Galatians. [Galatians 2:21]  If we were somehow able to pay for our own sins, or if we could find the wherewithal to repent of them on our own without the leading of the Holy Spirit, then God may have been able to spare His own Son the agony of the cross, thereby removing His need to drink from the bitter cup of our salvation.  But since those things are in fact impossible for sinful men and women like us, God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, and we can be assured that there was no other way but through the cross to defeat not just our sin, but even death and the devil.

Holy Scripture clearly testifies again and again that Christ Jesus suffered a painful death for us ungodly people, so that God could make righteous people out of unrighteous sinners through faith in the work of His Son Jesus.  And now this evening, we gather as a peculiar people redeemed for God and by God through the death of His Son.  It was His Son’s passion, that is His divine love that turned Him to the cross to suffer and die for you.  It was His love for you that caused Him to be obedient unto death, even death upon a cross so that by His stripes you may be healed; by His atoning death, you may be forgiven.  It was the death of Jesus Christ that disarmed the principalities and powers of sin, death, and the devil and opened wide the very gates of heaven for miserable sinners like as us.

A principal teaching of the Gospel is that Christ died for our sins.  And the scriptures add a very important addendum to this truth: “We have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died.” [2 Corinthians 5:14]  Or as the prophet Isaiah said, “(Christ) died as our substitute.” [Isaiah 53:6]  It was our sins that He carried with Him upon the cross.  That is why you should care very deeply about this evening and our Lord’s passion.  He was wounded for your transgressions.  And with His stripes you have been healed, that is forgiven of all of your sins.  On that cursed, yet for us a blessed tree, Jesus chose to taste death, eternal death, and for we sinners and our salvation, He experienced for the first time what it means to be forsaken of God and cast away from His presence.  As St. Paul said, “Christ became a curse for us.”  And by this, He redeemed us from the curse of the law.  In His kingdom there will forever be no more condemnation for sinners such as us; we who turn to Jesus, His passion, His death, and the gift of new life that He gives through the cross.

The absolute assurance that you have all of this work assuring your salvation is found in your baptism.  There you were baptized into the death of Christ and there you became a partaker of everything that He won through His passion and death.  In other words, baptism is your guarantee that while Christ suffered upon the cross, He had you on His mind and in His heart. Because you have been baptized into both Christ’s passion and death, baptism is not just confined to one act in your life, whether you were baptized as a child or an adult.  No, but rather it is the beginning of a life which is to be lived in fellowship with the crucified Christ and His passion to save sinners.  So, to live as a baptized child of God, that is as a Christian is to live “by faith in the Son of God, who loved (you) and gave Himself (up) for (you).” [Galatians 2:20]

Even though the death of Christ is the most world shaking event in history, it is also a constant source of assurance, joy, and thankfulness.  Because Christ Jesus died forsaken on the cross, any one who trusts in Him needs never be afraid that they will die forsaken and abandoned by God.  Because in His passion on Good Friday, Christ bore the sins of the whole world, we sinners can live our entire lives not as strangers to God, but as His own dear children by faith in Him who first loved us and died for us.  AMEN!

“Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.  But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our  iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed.   All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the  Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:4-6)

When have you turned away from God?  The answer unfortunately is, every time you sin!  Now are you aware that when you turn away from God, when you sin, you are really turning away from life  itself? But how can you turn back to God after you’ve turned away? How can you return to the very God you have so terribly disobeyed?  You seem to be in a bit of a conundrum; between a rock and a  hard place.  I mean if you’ve sinned against him you need his forgiveness, right?  But isn’t it your sin’ which perhaps is your pride, that keeps you from asking for His forgiveness. So how can God  forgive such blatant sin? How can God forgive sinners like us? How can we truly know that when we have done such great wrongs against Him, that we can just run back to the very God we sinned  against.   How can you be sure that when you call out to Him, you will find a loving Father who forgives?

Here is one important truth: You can’t know this or believe it by your own reason or strength. God Himself must reveal it to you and teach you about it. And so He does that very thing. Tonight,  through the prophet Isaiah, God teaches us his gospel, the good news about His forgiving love with absolute certainty, as He shows us the life and struggle of His suffering Servant whose very real  suffering alone brings us forgiveness, peace, and health.

Every spiritual blessing God has to give to sinners like us, He gives because of the suffering of His Servant. The suffering of the Servant of the Lord, which has accomplished something great and  wonderful. It has opened for us the door to Paradise. It has taken away our sin, reconciled us to God, and given us eternal life. We call what he did the vicarious atonement.

It is vicarious because the  Servant suffered for us, on our behalf as our substitute. He took our place. He did what he did for us, as our representative. He acted vicariously.  It is atonement because His suffering brought us back into a right relationship, into fellowship with God.  Through the Servants vicarious suffering, He brought us true peace with God, and He fulfilled all of our obligations of holiness, by paying everything we owed with His own suffering.  This vicarious atonement is at the center of our faith as Christians.  If you take it away, we are no better off than any of the false religions and cults.  You see, the vicarious atonement  reveals God’s love for us.

Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. They were our griefs and our sorrows. Some are caused by others through no fault of our own, but surely many have been caused by our own sinful living.  Regardless of how or why they come to us, He carried every one of them. He not only sympathized with us because we suffer, He in fact took up every one of those sufferings! He bore them in his own body. When he healed the sick, He took on every painful malady and experienced it in His own suffering. The disease he cured he bore. The griefs he removed he suffered. So, we can say that all of the benefits that He gives to His church, He paid for with His own suffering.

Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. Pay close attention to these words, “Stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.”  Do you understand that it was God the Father who placed these things upon His Servant Son? It wasn’t a miscarriage of justice plotted against Jesus by corrupt religious leaders and sneaky politicians. No, God did it Himself. While it’s true that God used those sinful, evil men to carry out his will ultimately, it was God who did the deed! When we see Jesus alone, suffering the abuse of men we must always remember that he was stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God himself because of us. God punished all sins of all sinners of all times and placed them squarely upon His Son Jesus Christ as punishment for our sins!

God punished his Servant. This is the most amazing kind of love. All other forms of love pale in comparison. Who would imagine that the Father would ever strike, smite, and afflict His own dear Son whom he loved from eternity to save sinners like us! What a mystery this is, and so beyond our sinful minds’ ability to grasp!  It is a kind of love that no human at any time could ever have thought of or demonstrated.  St. John described this agape love like this: “This is love, not that we have loved God but that he (first) loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation (or payment) for our sins.

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. So, does God punish or forgive?  Well, He does both at the same time. The Servant was wounded, pierced, punished, and  He was crucified. For what?  For your sins. God forgives you by punishing Jesus. “The chastisement for our peace was upon him.” He was punished instead of us. God makes peace with us by punishing His Son Jesus instead of us. That is love. “And by His stripes (by His sufferings) we are healed ( we are forgiven).” Jesus was whipped. That’s what brought us forgiveness; our healing from the disease of sin. He takes our place and by taking our place he gives us what is His and takes what is ours. Isaiah goes on:

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Grace might be free, but it’s certainly not cheap. How dare we imagine that forgiveness of sins comes from nowhere!  Someone has to pay; don’t you see that?  Where does it come from?  I will tell you from where… it comes from love and it comes from suffering. That kind of forgiveness must be earned.

It’s not that God isn’t a gracious God, because He is. It’s not that God can’t forgive, because He does.  But we must always remember that God in His Word has clearly declared that sin must be punished.  So, you can now see that if we have any hope of forgiveness and life, it must come from a God who can never lie or deceive or make false threats or false promises. It must come from a God who both forgives and punishes. We can never have one without the other, as if we could choose between the God who forgives and the God who stands in judgment against sin. They come from the same God; they are the same God.

So how can God be both gracious and just at the same time? How can God forgive sins and punish sins at the same time? Well the prophet Isaiah explains: “And the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” God doesn’t forgive without paying the price for forgiveness. The reason we can know for sure that God forgives our sins is because He laid every one of them upon His Son Jesus.

Tonight, I hope you understand now that through Jesus vicarious atonement, He is both teaching about Himself and showing us how He deals with our sin.  Isn’t it comforting and reassuring to know that we can always run to God and find him as a loving, forgiving, and gracious Father who will never turn us away?  I pray that you will always remember this teaching tonight about Christ’s vicarious atonement, and let it help you remember two important truths about your faith: First, for Christ’s sake all of your sins are forgiven.  Second, apart from faith in Christ you will never have true forgiveness of sins.

For Christ’s sake all our sins are forgiven. How do we know? He was wounded for our transgressions. That’s how we know. He was bruised for our iniquities. That’s how we know. The LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. That’s how we know. We know our sins are forgiven because we know Jesus. Our sins aren’t forgiven because we believe they are forgiven. Our sins are forgiven because Jesus Christ, true God and true man, suffered and died for them. Our faith didn’t put him on the cross to suffer and die. Our faith doesn’t take away our sins.  Jesus and Jesus alone take away our sins, and he does it by suffering for them. For Christ’s sake all our sins have been forgiven.

What we must understand, is that apart from faith in Christ we don’t have the forgiveness of sins. The fact that God forgives all sins for Christ’s sake doesn’t mean that everyone has the forgiveness of sins. God forgives. He forgives all those for whom Jesus suffered and died. That means he forgives the whole world. There is no one for whom Jesus did not die. Therefore, there is no one God did not forgive when Jesus suffered and died on the cross.  But God forgiving someone does not always mean that that someone receives the forgiveness of sins. We can’t put Jesus on the cross to take our sins away. Forgiveness is God’s gift. But forgiveness is never received outside of faith in Jesus Christ. Only those who trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins receive from God the forgiveness of their sins. Apart from Christ our sins are not forgiven. Only through faith in him do we know that we have received the forgiveness of sins.

This is why we believe, teach, and confess Jesus as the suffering Servant.  It is why no other message must ever be preached from this pulpit, and this is why we should never tire of hearing this gospel message. It is the source of our faith, and it alone is what brings us joy. It is our strength when we face doubts and temptations, and it is why we confess our sins to God and claim his suffering Servant as our very own. When we know Christ and him crucified we know that God sees us at our very worst and forgives us all our sins, sets us at peace with himself, and rescues us from death and hell. Like foolish sheep we wandered away, but by God’s grace we poor sheep have been returned to the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls. Amen

Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” 8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? So they took Jesus, 17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”  16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,

31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness-his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth-that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” 38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. 39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” 44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness-his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth-that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” 38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

Meditation 1 (John 19:1-16a)

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. 4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” 5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” 8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” 12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

So they took Jesus, 17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”  16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,
